Nanga Parbat Expedition Pakistan | Himalaya Treks & Tours
Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world, stands as the second highest peak in Pakistan, after K2. Situated in the Diamir district of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan, it serves as the western anchor of the Himalayas, separated from the Karakoram range by the mighty Indus River. Rising dramatically from the Indus valley, Nanga Parbat is a true testament to nature’s grandeur.
Himalaya Treks & Tours offers a comprehensive 50-day Nanga Parbat Expedition. Our full board service extends until the base camp, with the expedition duration adjustable based on client experience and ability. In Pakistan, various systems are in place to collect visas for expeditions. Each climber must obtain their Pakistan visa from their home country or nearest country, supported by permit application documents through Himalaya Treks & Tours. Confirmation is required by the end of March for participation in June, July, and August.
Our journey begins in Islamabad, where our representative will greet you at Islamabad International Airport and transfer you to your hotel for rest. In the afternoon, a briefing about the Nanga Parbat Expedition will be held. After a restful night in Islamabad, you will travel to Chillas Town via the Karakoram Highway. An overnight stay in Chillas is followed by a 2-3 hour drive and trek through quiet, lush scenery. As you wind through the gorge, you will be awe-struck by the spectacular view of Nanga Parbat’s ice-hung precipices and soaring ridges, stretching 16,000 feet from top to bottom.
Nanga Parbat is renowned for its beauty and challenge, earning it the title of one of the most beautiful and formidable mountains on earth.
Since the ill-fated British expedition led by A. F. Mummery in 1895, climbers have pursued the summit through various routes, with few successful ascents. Nanga Parbat comprises a 20km series of peaks and ridges, culminating in an ice crest at 8,125 meters. Its South Face, the Rupal Face, rises 5,000 meters high, while the North or Raikot Face plunges over 7,000 meters, forming one of the world’s deepest gorges.
The first successful climb was in 1953 by a joint Austrian-German Expedition, with Hermann Buhl completing the final ascent in a grueling 41-hour solo effort without oxygen. In 1970, Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner and his brother Gunther scaled the south face (Rupal Face), descending by the Diamir face. The south face, the largest in the world, extends over four kilometers above the base camp, with only five recorded ascents.
Nanga Parbat’s isolation necessitates ascents from much lower altitudes compared to other 8,000-meter peaks. Polish climber Jerzy Kukuczka described it as the only mountain climbed through all four seasons, from the scorching summer at its base to minus 40º at the summit. Most contemporary attempts are via the Westerly Diamir face, considered the easiest and safest route, with the Kinshofer Route as the standard path. The first successful winter ascent occurred in February 2016 by Ali Sadpara, Alex Txikon, and Simone Moro. The second winter ascent was completed by Polish climber Tomasz Mackiewicz and French climber Elisabeth Revol in January 2018.
